Zones in 2004-05The 2004/05 season saw the start of a increase in billfish numbers of the Kenyan coast, particularly broadbill swordfish (111 tagged) on the North Kenya Bank. Sailfish numbers improved slightly from a four year slump, while marlin numbers were poor.

 

Zone 1: Lamu, Kiwayu & Kui. 239 fish tagged. 210 sailfish (10%), 16 marlin (9%), 3 broadbill & 10 others.

 

Zone 2: Ziwayu. 128 fish tagged. 127 sailfish (6%) & 1 other.

 

Zone 3: Ngomeni. 192 fish tagged. 143 sailfish (7%), 5 marlin (3%) & 44 other.

 

Zone 4: North Kenya Banks. 275 fish tagged. 134 sailfish (7%), 38 marlin (22%), 96 broadbill & 7 others.

 

Zone 5: Malindi. 797 fish tagged. 740 sailfish (37%) & 57 others.

 

Zone 6: Watamu. 584 fish tagged. 168 sailfish (8%), 12 marlin (7%) & 422 others.

 

Zone 7: The Rips. 359 fish tagged. 343 sailfish (17%), 11 marlin (6%), 2 broadbill & 5 others.

 

Zone 8: Kilifi. 21 fish tagged. 14 sailfish (1%), 2 marlin (1%), 2 broadbill & 6 others.

 

Zone 9: Mombasa & Mtwapa. 36 fish tagged. 32 sailfish (2%), 3 marlin (2%) 3 broadbill & 1 other.

 

Zone 10: Shimoni. 189 fish tagged. 99 sailfish (5%), 89 marlin (50%) & 1 broadbill.
